Our group has settled on the idea of writing about Hydraulic Fracturing. The process involves pumping pressurized 'fracking' fluid into shale formations about six to seven-thousand feet under ground in order to fracture the rock, resulting in the release of clean burning natural gas. Hydrofracking has been common practice since the 50's, but increased concerns for environmental protection has cast a dark shadow over it. For this reason, our group set out to search for answers in a sea of mixed opinions with hopes of finding the truth about fracking.
My particular area of research explores the potential harm that Hydrofracking that cause to humanity as well as the environment. I have found many articles that point out the dangers that fracking can cause, most of which focus greatly on ground water and aquifer contamination or fracking induced seismic activity. But for every article I find that points out the dangers of fracking, I find three more recent articles that shoot it down. However, I haven't found many articles that have provided me with a solid enough refutation of fracking induced seismic activity. I believe that if our paper is to really bring home the point that fracking is an unethically dangerous practice, we will have to find a source that can supply proof, or at least hard evidence, of hydrofacking causing notable earthquakes. If we are unable to do so, or if we encounter an article that disproves the possibility of earthquakes entirely, I fear we may have to pull a 180 on our research in order to avoid putting great effort into a researched based document that can easily be refuted.
